Fences

Fence panels, posts and trellis

Close-board, lap, slatted and trellis fencing, stained or painted in the colour you choose. Long runs are sprayed for an even coat with the edges and posts brushed, so there is no overspray on your neighbour's side.

Weathered timber is washed down, left to dry and any loose flaking removed first. We will tell you whether a stain or a paint suits the timber and how long each tends to last.

  • Close-board, lap, slatted and trellis panels
  • Sprayed for even coverage, edges brushed by hand
  • Water-based stains or solvent preservatives, your choice of colour

Garden shed stained black on block paving, after the work
Decking, sheds and garden rooms

Decking, sheds, summerhouses and garden bars

Decking is cleaned back, left to dry and finished with a decking stain or oil that soaks in rather than sits on top, so it does not peel. Sheds, summerhouses, playhouses and garden rooms get the same care, with doors, trims and window frames picked out if you want a two-tone finish.

New timber and old grey boards both come up well: the shed in the photo went from weathered grey to black, and the before shot is in the gallery. Ask about non-slip finishes for decking by a door or steps.

  • Decking stained or oiled, non-slip finishes available
  • Sheds, summerhouses, playhouses and garden bars
  • Trims, doors and frames in a second colour if you like

Render, masonry and exterior woodwork

Render, pebble-dash, fascias, doors and windows

Masonry paint on render and pebble-dash, mock Tudor timbers, fascias, soffits and bargeboards, cladding, front doors and window frames. Loose and flaking material is scraped back, cracks filled and the surface sealed or primed before the top coats go on.

Ladders, scaffolding or a cherry picker get us to gables and upper floors. Whole-house exteriors and single front doors are both welcome.

Weather and timing

Outside paint and stain need a dry surface and a dry day to cure, so spring to autumn is the main season, with the odd dry week in winter for sheltered work. We will not paint a wet fence or a cold front door just to hit a date, because it would not last. If the forecast turns we move the day and tell you straight away.

Questions people ask

Stain or paint for my fence?

Stain soaks into the timber, shows the grain and weathers gracefully; paint gives a solid colour and hides old timber better. Both need a dry surface. We will recommend one when we see the fence.

How long does a fence finish last?

Two to four years for most stains depending on the weather it faces, longer for solid paints. South-facing panels fade faster than sheltered ones.

Do you supply the stain or paint?

Either way. Tell us the colour and we will bring it, or we will use what you have already bought. The quote form asks which.

What about my neighbour's side?

We only do the side you own unless you both ask. Spraying is masked so nothing goes over the fence.
